In this week's article, we’ll talk about IP ratings so you can understand what it means and what your board is capable of.Electric skateboards are electric machines and, as such, are susceptible to water damage. Several electric components in electric skateboards, notably the battery and motors, are prone to water damage. In addition to being susceptible to water damage, electric components in electric skateboards can also be damaged by mud and grime, especially if the board has a low water resistance level.With the increased demand for water-resistant electric skateboards, nearly all boards in the market today are resistant to light splashes (IPx4 rating). Several others can also withstand light rain or occasional puddles (IPX5), while several high-end boards can sustain deep puddles or heavy rain, i.e. IPX6 or higher.However, even with the highest water resistance rating, it’s important to note that no electric skateboard is truly waterproof. There’s a clear difference between water resistance and being waterproof. Even electric skateboards with the best IP rating are still not technically waterproof.Let's bring some light to the meaning of IP rates.What are IP Ratings?Electric products, including e-skateboards, have electrical and electronic units/components i.e. motor, battery, sensors, electronic controls, wires, switches, etc. which can deteriorate and malfunction when they come in contact with dust or liquids.Ingress Protection (IP) Ratings is a system developed by the International Electrochemical Commission (IEC) to standardize the grading of electric products based on their ability to withstand the ingress (intrusion) of liquids or dust. The system has been extensively adopted across the electronic products industry and functions to enlighten consumers about the capability of a particular product to withstand dust and liquids.The IP rating is indicated by the abbreviation IP and a subsequent two-digit number. The first numeral after IP classifies the protection level pertaining to solid objects like debris and dust particles rated on a scale of X-6. For instance, 1 denotes little protection, while 6 indicates full protection from dust and debris.The second digit in the IP rating indicates the product’s ability to withstand liquids. 0 indicates no protection from liquids while 9 indicates protection from more massive exposure, like water at high pressure and temperatures directed at the electronic from diverse angles, usually associated with steam cleaning. In certain instances, the letter ‘X’ can replace either numeral, as popularly seen on budget scooters with an IPX4 rating. In this case, IPX4 would mean that the scooter has only been tested for water resistance and not dust resistance.The three main points of ingress protection in electric skateboards are the motor, the circuit board, and the battery. The circuit board is a very sensitive part of the board.It connects to the accelerator, brake sensors, lights, and other parts, and will not function once water or dust penetrates. The motor also consists of electronic components which can be damaged by the ingress of dust and liquids.First Numeral- Debris (Solid) ProtectionIf the first number is 0 (IP0) there is no protection from dirt, dust, rocks, or anything else.1 > 50 mm1 means protection against intrusion by body parts, measuring about 50 mm and over, such as hands or feet. However, it does not deter deliberate attempts at access.2 > 12.5 mm2 means protection against fingers or objects measuring 12.5 mm and above.3 > 2.5 mmThis level denotes protection against thick wires, tools, etc. that measure 2.5 mm and above.4 > 1 mmProtection against wires, slender screws, bolts, etc., measuring 1 mm and above.5 Dust ProtectedAt 5, the product receives partial protection against dust. It can therefore permit a substantial amount of dust that can damage or interfere with the normal operation of the product. With an IP 5 there’s pretty much no dirt can get in there at all.6 Dust-tight6 means that the equipment offers complete protection against contact (dust-tight). A vacuum seal is used to provide complete protection against entry of dust or any solid foreign substance.Second Number (Liquid) Rating Table1 Dripping Water1 means the product is not susceptible to damage by dripping water i.e. vertically falling water drops2 Dripping water from a source tilted at a 15° angleAt 2, the electronic is safe from water dripping from a source, tilted to a 15° angle from the vertical axis3 Spraying WaterThe electronics will not be harmed by water coming from any high-pressure source tilted up to 60° from the vertical axis.4 Splashing of WaterThe electronic is protected from water splashes directed at it from any direction. (Here we are starting to have decent protection)5 Water JetsLow-pressure water jets projected by a nozzle (6.3 mm) shall have no effect on the equipment. This rating can also sustain water directed from any angle.6 Strong water jetsThe equipment is resistant to strong (high-pressure) water jets, from any direction.Usually, this is the maximum grade you can get with an electric skateboard.7 Immersion in water bodies no deeper than 1 m.No water ingress if the product is placed underwater up to 1m for a period of 30 minutes.8 Prolonged and deeper immersion.The product is protected against the effects of continuous immersion in water. 8 can withstand immersion at greater depths.9 or K Extreme pressure and high temperature at any angleThe equipment is protected from water ingress caused by steam cleaning, high-pressure, and high-temperature jet wash.Linky 1.0 has an IP55, but our R&D team is now working on improving its grade to IP65.As always our goal is to give our customers a premium product that lasts as long as possible.As you can read in the previous article, Linky 2.0 will have a new innovative electronic compartment, which will protect the system even more from the infiltration of water and dust.How to maintain water resistance in your electric skateboard?While a water-resistant electric skateboard will withstand light rain, you should still be willing to perform regular maintenance to keep it in top shape. One of the most innovative features of the new Linky 2.0 is the electronic compartment.In the old Linky, the structural compartment was where the PCB (printed circuit board) and battery pack were installed.In this new Linky, we thought about sustainability and customer service.We designed a new compartment with two components: The structural component: this part is directly connected to the wooden deck (as you can read in the previous article here). A plastic structure in which to install the PCB - motor control and battery pack. The reasons we arrived at this solution are as follows:IMPROVED PERFORMANCEAs can be seen in the image below, we designed two aluminum caps that will increase heat dissipation, one for the PCB and one for the battery pack.IMPROVED IP GRADEThis solution will enable us to increase protection from water and dust infiltration.MORE SUSTAINABLE PRODUCT AND EFFICIENT CUSTOMER SERVICEThe customer will be able to remove the tub if it is damaged and ship it to us for repair, without having to ship the entire skateboard - saving time and carbon footprint.DISASSEMBLY DESIGNOnce the customer is finished with Linky, they can send it back to us and we can remove the damaged parts without having to throw away the entire product. Our team is currently putting the early prototypes of Linky 2.0 to the test on the streets.In this article, we will share a few updates regarding the new Deck, which will look and feel completely different. We won’t use any carbon fiber this time, and we’ll explain why. Wood over Carbon Fiber: why? For years we’ve been using a sandwich structure made of 3 mm of carbon fiber and 3 mm of bamboo, glued together by an external plastic to smooth the corners of the deck.For the new linky, we chose a more traditional solution. From the tests we had run over the past months, we came to the conclusion that the type of wood used improved the maneuverability of the product, favoring the absorption of the vibration coming from the road, and improving the overall driving comfort.Why traditional wood was a tricky material?Wood is usually abandoned in traditional electric longboards because the coupling between the plastic containing the battery and circuit board and the deck can be a weak point when the deck undergoes significant bending due to weight.For this reason, wood is usually coupled with fiberglass or carbon fiber to increase stiffness, however, causing problems with riding comfort because the structure being stiffer no longer absorbs road vibrations, which are instead absorbed by the skater's feet and legs (if you ever experienced numbness on your legs while riding, now you know why ;-))Over the past few months, we have focused on studying this issue in depth, looking for a solution that can offer more comfort but also use sustainable materials. Our efforts have been particularly focused on: eliminating gluing decreasing the number of components trying to limit the use of composite materials that are difficult to recycle. What’s the direction we’re taking:The solution we’re testing now is a mix between wood and a particular kind of plastic.The structure of Linky's deck is made by coupling plywood wood with a structural plastic tub that contains the battery and electronics, and the coupling is designed to ensure the solidity of the components without compromising their flexibility, thus improving ride comfort.Another advantage of using wood and reducing components is more extraordinary overall lightness.What woods are we testing?1. Maple: Affordable and ultra-durable. It can take a beating and look great for many years to come. Because it takes dark stains well, maple is often used to mimic more expensive woods. Cons – Because of its ability to mimic pricier woods, it puts maple trees at risk from deforestation.2. Birch: Birch trees are at home in Europe, Asia, and Japan. Birch is harder than other hardwoods and has great durability. It has excellent benign properties, with good crushing strength and shock resistance. Reasonable availability, but more limited if selected for color.3. Beech: it is hardwood, moderately solid, with good mechanical properties. It has particularly high resistance to compression, though less so to bending or tension because of its short fibers. Very fine texture. The problem we are trying to overcome is the tendency to warp substantially when exposed to changes in humidity.Linky has been reimagined, redesigned, and remastered from the ground up.That’s just the start. While the rest of the industry buys parts from Chinese factories and they just assemble, we develop the board ourselves.Quality control—the key to customer retention—has to be a reality, not a slogan.This is something that differentiates us completely from the rest of the industry.The Challenge and Features.The design challenge for our new board was to have an electric skateboard with much more power, more speed, and longer ride times, without compromising its foldability and lightness.We also wanted to bring the production in-house, but finding local suppliers wasn’t easy.Through sketches and drawings, various ergonomic and functional studies were done on the Linky's locking system to make it easier, functional, and intuitive.Great effort has been dedicated to the design of the new remote. Once upon a time, somewhere in the late 40s or 50s, the world gave birth to the very first skateboard. Who invented it, who thought it up? No one knows for sure. However, one thing is certain: these “sidewalk surfers” were most likely developed by California wave riders looking for a way to surf on land, when the waves slowed. These early skateboards, made by attaching metal roller skates to planks of wood, evolved into the stylish, fast personal transport vehicles we see today.Skateboarding on its own can be quite an exhilarating experience for riders as they cruise down the pavement, go off the road on an all-terrain board, or indulge in the breathtaking experience of kiteboarding. However, the creation and development of motorized skateboards such as the Linky took skateboarding to a new level. The electric skateboard soon became known as a cost-effective, fast, and eco-friendly mode of urban transportation for boarding enthusiasts everywhere.The Emergence of the Motorized SkateboardRegarding the history of the development of electric skateboards, we can't help but wonder what the ancestors of our electric skateboards looked like. In other words, what was the model of our first electric skateboard?The ancestor of electric skateboards was not a longboard powered by electricity, but a longboard powered by gasoline. -Called MotoBoard.It was invented by Jim Rugroden, a student in Berkeley, California, who invented MotoBoard in his brother's garage in Campbelltown in the South San Francisco Bay Area when he took a break from physics studies in the summer of 1975. MotoBoard started from a simple push to develop a prototype into a precision automatic axle drive sports car.It encountered an accidental opportunity and started mass production. While taking photos for Skateboarder Magazine in Carlsbad, California, Rugroden met with onlooker entrepreneur Bill Posey, who eventually teamed up to form Quantimotion, Inc., DBA MotoBoard International.MotoBoard's unique eye-catching ability has gained worldwide recognition through numerous media exposures, but the use of gasoline has an impact on environmental pollution.Compared with the gasoline-powered long version of MotoBoard, Louie Finke's skateboard is closer to our modern electric skateboard. At the end of 1997, Louie Finkle introduced a new type of skateboard to the world, which is a new type of wireless electric skateboard, and was patented in April 1999.This product was revolutionary and made an instant success, but it was very expensive, so it could not be owned by everyone. However, it was not until 2004-2006 that electric motors and batteries had enough torque and efficiency to effectively power circuit boards. Kickstarting the path toward the modern electric skateboardAs technology progressed, more powerful electric motors and batteries with sufficient torque became available in the market. This led to a steep rise in the amount of skateboard design and development projects, and Kickstarter was key to their success.In 2012, Sanjay Dastoor, John Ulmen, and Matthew Tran launched a Kickstarter campaign to raise $100,000 to develop their electric skateboard design. The campaign exceeded that target by far, so they founded Boosted Boards and began manufacturing and selling their 12-pound electric skateboard that can reach up to 20 miles an hour. WHAT'S BETTER — A HUB MOTOR OR BELT DRIVE?Belt drive electric skateboards provide more torque and generally feel more responsive than hub motor models. Belt drive boards also give you access to a wider variety of wheels. With that said, they are also noticeably louder than boards with hub motors. Ultimately, the answer to this question will depend on the rider and what’s most important to them in a board. 2. DOES IT RIDE/PUSH JUST LIKE A NORMAL LONGBOARDNot exactly. No electric longboard feels exactly the same as a non-electric one because the power train system limits the free spinning of the powered wheel, but the difference is minimal.On the other hand, without having to foot-pedal, you do get a sensation of freedom and ease of travel on Linky. What Skateboarding Means to Me...

When I think of skating, concepts such as a sense of freedom, fun, lightheartedness, physical and mental well-being, and travel come to mind. Skateboarding for me is all these things and more.I have come to understand it over the years. When, years ago, as a young teenager I started riding my first skateboard, it was lots of fun. Today, as a “differently young” woman, in the dawn of her thirties, I still enjoy skateboarding a lot.So let me tell you what skating means to me. As you read, I'm sure you will find things in common, if you too have a passion for this magic means of transportation.Riding for me is many things.First of all, it is something special and strictly personal. It is my own space, giving me oxygen, and making me feel good not only physically but also mentally.It is a feeling of freedom. Suddenly the little daily problems fade away, what matters is the essentials and it is as if I am in tune with the world around me. In short, free from the superfluous.When I ride my board, I feel strong.  Overcoming all the challenges I meet along my ride fuel my self-confidence. A very important aspect that helps me to achieve my daily goals and to do that thing that maybe "I always do with a little effort."Exercise - a somewhat less obvious answer, but as you get older (I'm in my 30s) you might find yourself surprised by how important it is to get out and exercise. Skateboarding is a fun way to get exercise... most people my age would rather hit the gym.Challenging - sure, I could do other fun things that are easier to learn, but few things offer the same sense of achievement as skateboarding. You fail and you fail and you fail, but you keep trying different variables only to eventually succeed. The learning curve is steep and challenging, but the feeling of finally landing something after however many hundreds of attempts is unmatched.Do you know how in surfing videos surfers have a huge connection with the sea? It's like a trance. Nothing else matters. It's bliss every time I'm out there on my board and all I think about is the sound of the road under my feet. Everything else disappears.It is rewarding. On a personal level, all skateboarders have one attitude in common: they don't fail and then give up. They fail until they succeed.So success becomes an even better feeling.
